Metal For Dummies

I'll be the first to admit I'm a dummy. My introduction to music was pop-punk (Fall Out Boy and the like), and although I've expanded my repetoire, I haven't gotten into the meat of a lot of other genres.

Back during the awesome adventure I dictated in my first post, I found "Metal" by Gary Numan on YouTube. On the "Suggestions" panel on the right, there was a preview for a video titled "10 Genres of Metal in 3 Minutes." I checked it out, and my mind was instantly asploded.

As an amateur guitarist, it's no surprise that I'd like to get into metal. I'd even settle for the easy stuff, like tremolo picking a major scale. On a personal note, my good friend and first guitar tutor dabbles in speed and folk. According to him it doesn't take much more than time and practice, but right now I don't have either (especially since I'm busy writing a blog about "inferior" genres).

If the video above was too hard to "visualize," then the video below (with an identical music track) might help. Keep in mind that this is just a taste of the diversity in metal. Other interesing subgenres include groove and sludge (Wikipedia does a good job at forming a list).

The metal had its way,
