Week in Review: Be a Man

Movies: Superheroes

Over the past couple of weeks I've made an effort to catch up on the superhero blockbusters I've missed. It began with Logan and continued with Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, Civil War, Doctor Strange and Godzilla (the latter being slated for a joint cinematic franchise with King Kong). Out of all of these titles I have to place Logan on top, and not because of it's gut-wrenching violence (which I believe was made so gruesome so as to dissuade the audience from any distraction towards bloodlust). This noir drama reminds us that the gods we've placed on thrones for three trilogies have been human all along, and humans have an end (finitus) that gives purpose to life and an end (telos) and meaning to sacrifice.

Song: "Sleep in the Heat"

With frenetic energy and a penchant for the emotional, Canadian punk rockers PUP with help from Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard depict a torrid tale with all-too-familiar motifs about the love one has for man's best friend.

I have to thank the Liturgy Guys (ep. 41) for granting an explanation on why I should continue ignoring popular radio (and also why 4:33 is a waste of time). Once you hear it...

... you can't unhear it.

Podcast: The Art of Manliness

Learning how to be a better man has not felt this rewarding in a while. The past number of episodes from the Art of Manliness has been replete with wisdom in a multitude of avenues.

  • A magician translates sleight of hand to leadership success
  • A Navy admiral teaches that saving the world begins by making your bed
  • Dirty jobs may be dirty but they're so necessary
  • Blindness brings clarity
  • The history of masculinity is tied with the history of war
  • The history of masculinity is tied with the history of beards
  • Living in the darkness is not so scary

From the latter episode, the notion of first sleep and second sleep really intrigued me, especially in describing the activities of people with this sort of cycle.

If there's no electric light, if there's no electricity to do all the things that we do when it gets dark out, folks would go to sleep and they would sleep for a while and then they would wake up at 1 or 2 or 3 in the morning and have this intermission, as it were in their sleep... Couples would make love, they'd have conversations, people would get up and go see their friends, people would pursue their private hobbies, things they didn't get to do in the day. And then they would go back to sleep and sleep until the sun came up.

Lifestyle: One-Step Shoe-Tying

A fellow coworker spent about 20 minutes teaching a cubicle full of uneducated schmucks (myself included) this elegant and efficient method for tying shoe laces.
